When I think of innovation, I think, “world-changing”. I think, “Innovation is something that helps so many people, that changes lives”
Well, imagine if you could see 20/20 vision without any glasses, daytime contacts, or surgery.
Sounds like an impossible miracle?
Welcome to Advanced Orthokeratology, a revolutionary development in eye care technology that allows individuals to sleep with special contact lenses on, and wake-up to perfect vision.
My Experience
I grew up wearing glasses from a very young age, and I hated them. I found them uncomfortable, annoying and a hassle, particularly because if I was ever caught in a moment without them (for example, getting a glass of water in the middle of the night) my vision was incredibly poor and I couldn’t see anything. (I usually ended up at the bottom of the stairs!
)
I quickly switched into regular, daytime, contact lenses – which, while better looking on my face (in my opinion) were still not a feasible option when I went swimming, played soccer on the dusty field, and resulted red, itchy eyes, after wearing them all day. I remember being the gym playing basketball (I was never a good basketball player, so I spent more time running from the ball than towards it!) and my contact lens fell on the floor in the gym. The whole class had to stop to help me look for it!
My first encounter with Orthokeratology was at the approximate age of seven years old. It was a revolutionary experience for me. I can’t fully describe how Orthokeratology impacted my life. Not only did it prevent my vision from further deteriorating (I assure you, I had very, very poor vision at a young age), but it opened the world to me in a whole new way. All of a sudden, sports, dramatic arts, being active, standing in dusty areas – even just rubbing my eyes – became a feasible option without the fear of losing a contact lense. I have been a dedicated Ortho-k patient since, and many of my friends and other patients have found Orthokeraology to be an incredible experience.

How does Orthokeratology, or Ortho-K work?

Myopia, or near sightedness is caused by light coming into your eye in such a way that it doesn’t focis properly on the retina. Individuals with myopia, or near-sightedness generally correct their vision by using glasses or contact lenses to refocus their eyes, but now, Orthokeratology can replace those methods of vision improvement, and correct your vision without surgery.
When you sleep, you wear special Ortho-keratology lenses that gently reshape the surface of your eyes so that you can see clearly, even after you remove your lenses.
Who is a Candidate?
Orthokeratology is for a person of any age, who has myopia (or nearsightness). It is successful for people with up to -6.00 on your prescription, but is most effective for people with -4.00 or less. Astigamatism can also be treated up to a certain point.
As long as you have healthy eyes, it doesn’t matter your age – you can be a great candidate for Orthokeratology. Its a great option for young individuals who are not eligible candidate for LASIK, for people who work in dust, dirty environments or play sports/swim (which can cause problems for regular daytime contact lenses), or individuals who may need to enter a profession, such a policeman/woman or firefighter, where good eyesight is a requirement. Its also good for people who have dry eyes (a condition known to worsen with LASIK).

How well will I be able to see?
The goal is 20/20 vision, however 20/40 or 20/50 (the legal minimum for driving in Canada) is acceptable and achievable in most cases. The majority of the time, however, patients can achieve 20/20 vision. Its a very realistic goal.
How long does it take?
Orthokeratology can work surprisingly quickly on your eyes – it can reshape your eyes about 2 or 3 diopters of myopia in two weeks or less. Once your eyes reach the desired prescription, you need to wear your lenses when you sleep to maintain the prescription. Discontinuing to wear the lense all together allow your eyes to return to their original shape (or close to it).
